Start entering the information for your contact.
Consider adding more than just a person’s name, email, and phone number. It might seem odd at first, but adding their address, nickname, various phone numbers (work, home, mobile, etc.) will make Siri more useful to you.

At Gluu, we include addresses even when we know where someone lives. It lets us ask Siri something like, “How long will it take me to get to my friend’s house?” In this situation, Siri will tell you the estimated time taking traffic and road conditions into account. This is much faster than checking the traffic report.

The Notes section is handy. For instance, if you know someone who lives in a building with a buzzer code. Instead of remembering it, you could add that code to the Notes section of their contact card. Pull up their card when you are at their door to get the buzzer code.

And finally, don’t forget to scroll down to Birthdays if this is a contact you want to include in your Birthday Calendar. But for now, add their birthday and year if you want to keep track of how old they are. Leave the year blank if you only want to keep track of the date. We will cover how to view the Birthdays calendar in another class.

Tap on the blue label to the left of each field to change the description of the added information. The more precise you are here, the smarter Siri will be. For example, you can ask Siri to: “Call Marg at home,” but only if you have their home phone number labeled as Home.

The Contacts app is a super-charged version of your paper-based address book. The more information you add to each Contact Card, the more you can do with that information. For example, using Siri to call them on their correct line (home, work, cell, etc), getting directions to their location, being reminded of how to access their building or visitor parking stall, are just a few examples.

When you create a new contact, you will notice the Add URL field. This is where you add a website address for this contact (i.e.,: gluusociety.org). It’s handy to put website addresses into a Contact Card if it’s a website you go to often. It gives you one-tap access to that website. Much faster than finding it through a Google search or within your Bookmarks. Note: You will need to be connected to the internet to access a website.

Try adding a few websites you regularly visit to the Contacts app—a few ideas: LifeLabs, your online grocery store, etc. Then try accessing that website by pulling up that Contact Card.

Where is the contacts app?

Remember what the Contacts icon looks like – it is at the top of this page. Now swipe through your Home Screens. The Contacts app could be hidden in a folder. When you find it, press on the Contacts app icon until it wiggles and then drag it to where you want it.

Can I organize my contacts?

Yes. Go to Settings > Contacts and choose from the following options:

Sort Order: Sort your contacts alphabetically by first or last name. Whichever you choose, that part of their name will appear in bold print in your Contacts list.

Display Order: Show the contact first names before or after last names. This option does not affect Sort Order.

Why are my contacts showing up on my husband/daughter/etc/ iPhone?

Sounds like you are sharing the same Apple ID and have iCloud > Contacts > On. In this case, your contacts appear on all devices using that Apple ID. Apple is expecting that you have a unique Apple ID.

Heads up: If you delete a contact from one device, it will be deleted everywhere. There are quite a few steps to follow to have you both using your own Apple ID and ensure no contacts or other data is lost in the process. We suggest you get help from Apple to make this happen.
