What is Siri
Siri is a personal digital assistant built into your iPhone that lets you use voice commands to control your iPhone. You can get Siri to set alarms and timers, get reminders, check the sports scores, listen to music, open apps, and ask for directions. That is a partial list of what Siri can do.
Siri is an incredibly powerful technology that also very popular. So far, Siri takes in about 1 billion commands per week.
Siri is just called Siri. You don’t refer to Siri as a “he,” “she,” “him,” or “her.” Siri can have different voices and accents. It can speak in 21 languages at the time of this writing.

Powell Alexander Janulus is an 80-something Canadian polyglot who lives in White Rock, British Columbia. He entered the Guinness World Records in 1985 for fluency in 42 languages. Take that, Siri!
Do you need to be polite to Siri?
Interesting question. Siri is artificial intelligence software. There are no humans on the other end of your command, making things happen. This is a command from you to a software program. Siri cannot tell if you are tired, happy, grumpy, or being rude.
Some people say please, thank-you, and sorry to Siri. At Gluu, we don’t. We treat Siri like any other app on our device. We don’t ask the weather app to “Please show me the weather,” and we don’t say please, and thank you to Siri. But one can, of course.
Even though digital assistants sound very human, it’s important to understand that it is not a human. As our connected world becomes populated with more talking devices, at Gluu, we believe it is smart to keep the distinction between humans and machines in mind. This is all personal choice. Either way, it’s an intriguing conversation that few of us imagined we would every be having.
How did Siri get its name?
The Norwegian co-creator of Siri, Dag Kittalaus, stumbled on the name when he was thinking of names for his daughter. Siri means “beautiful woman who leads you to victory” in Norwegian. Then a son arrived instead, and the name was shelved until his speech recognition technology company needed a name for its digital assistant. The name Siri was resurrected because it is easy to say and easy to spell.
Apple bought Kittalaus’ company in 2010. Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, hated the name, Siri. But it seems no one could come up with a better one. So it stuck.
Siri is sometimes used as shorthand for “Speech Interpretation and Recognition Interface.”
What are the potential privacy and security risks of using Siri?
Siri does as much of its learning as possible right on your iPhone. According to Apple’s privacy statement: “Searches and requests are not associated with your identity — so your personal information isn’t gathered to sell to advertisers or other organizations. And end-to-end encryption ensures that data synced between your devices can’t be accessed, even by Apple.”
