Step 2

Scroll down to the CHOOSE A NETWORK section.

Select the name of the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. When you have correctly identified which Wi-Fi network to use, tap on its name.

You should only join the official Wi-Fi network for that location. If you are unsure what Wi-Fi network to join, ask someone who works there.

Step 3

The lock symbol to the left of a Wi-Fi network name means a password is needed to join that Wi-Fi network.

Not sure of the Wi-Fi network password? Ask someone who works there: “Can you give me the Wi-Fi password?” Be prepared to write it down and have them check that you have written it correctly. Capital letters are different than lower case letters, for instance.

Enter the Wi-Fi network password (if required) and select Join.

When you are successfully connected to that Wi-Fi network, a blue checkmark appears to the left of that Wi-Fi network name. You will also see the Wi-Fi symbol at the top of your screen.

When you are connected to Wi-Fi, its symbol appears in the top corner of your iPad. A handy way to check that you are correctly connected to Wi-Fi is to open any webpage. Tap somewhere on that webpage to make sure it’s working as expected. If you can interact with that webpage, you are connected to Wi-Fi. If you get a blank page or nothing happens, go back to Step 1 and try again.

Some Wi-Fi networks require you to login with an email address (even if you have used a password to sign on). This can create an extra step when connecting. If you are having trouble, ask someone who works there for help.

iPads are mobile devices, which means you can use them anywhere. Wi-Fi is almost everywhere, most of it can be used for free. Being able to connect your iPad to Wi-Fi is an essential skill. Once set up, your home Wi-Fi will remember you. You don’t need to log in every time you come home. Just walk in the door and wait a second for the magic to happen.

For practice, see what Wi-Fi network your iPad automatically connects to when you’re at home. You may have more than one Wi-Fi network name at home, depending on how your Wi-Fi was set up by your provider (Telus, Bell, Shaw, etc.).

Wi-Fi signals can travel up to about 100′. It’s fun to see what Wi-Fi networks are in your immediate area. Some have rather funny names. Just because someone can see your Wi-Fi network’s name doesn’t mean they can join it (unless you give them the password, of course).

Remember, the lock icon to the left of the Wi-Fi name means a password is required to join that Wi-Fi network.

Head into your community and practice connecting to Wi-Fi at a coffee shop, library, community centre, hair salon, restaurant, etc.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone who works there which Wi-Fi network you should use. Get the password from them while you’re at it.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi uses radio waves to broadcast a high-speed internet connection to your iPad without requiring cables or wires. Think of Wi-Fi like a two-way conversation with radio waves. It sends signals to your device and receives signals back from your device.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit information to and from the internet. These radio waves live on the spectrum right between the radio waves that deliver your favourite radio station and those used by your microwave. The World Health Organization, which tends to err on the side of caution, is very clear that there is no health risk from this type of radio-frequency communication devices.

What does Wi-Fi stand for?

Even the young things get this one wrong. Many think that Wi-Fi is an acronym for Wireless Fidelity, probably due to its similarity to the then term “hi-fi”. This is not the case (but the terms do rhyme).

What’s Hedy Lamarr’s connection to Wi-Fi?

Hedy Lamarr, the 1940s Oscar-nominated actor, was also an avid inventor. On June 10, 1941, she applied for a patent that became a precursor to the secure WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth technology that connects the planet today.

On her 101st birthday on November 9, 2015, Google honoured her scientific achievements by featuring her as the Google Doodle.
