Your iPad has two incredible cameras – one on the back and one on the front. It’s easy to switch between them. We will get into more detail about the Camera app and the Photos app in a future class, but for now let’s get you started with the basics.

Check that PHOTO is selected in the list of options down the right-hand side. When it is selected, the text will be in yellow. If PHOTO is not yet selected, tap on the word PHOTO.

Wave your hand past the rear-facing camera, so you have a sense of where it is. You will see your fingers appear on the iPad screen.

Some iPad cases can make it challenging to take a photo or shoot a video. These are the cases that have a folio or flap cover. Practice which way to hold your iPad, so the cover falls away from the camera. You may want to use the volume buttons to take your photos instead of the on-screen shutter button. Test this with your case, and ensure the volume buttons are easy to access.

If your case isn’t working for you, get another. Your iPad needs to be protected, but all its features also need to be accessible.

You want to get good at this. One reason is that you can hit the camera switcher icon by mistake and find yourself on the screen unintentionally. But it’s also fun during a video call to let people see who they are talking to, and then you can switch the camera to show them your surroundings. The easiest way to do that is to switch between the front and rear-facing cameras, and back again.

Video calls are all the rage these days. If you have already been on a video call, it’s only a matter of time. And your iPad is a perfect device to take that video call from anywhere.

Get ready for a successful video call by getting the right stand to put your iPad in the correct position. No one wants to look at your chest, chin, or up your nose! Try to get the front-facing camera just above your eye level. Make sure that you have a power cord close to where you’re going to take your video call, so you don’t have to worry about your iPad dying on you.

I don’t have the Camera app. How do I get it?

The camera app comes free on your iPad and cannot be deleted from the device. If you don’t see it on your home screen, try swiping towards the left to view your other home screens. It may be hidden on another home screen you didn’t even know you had.

It’s also possible that someone moved the camera app into a folder. This can make it difficult to see the camera app icon. So take a look around your home screens for a folder and see if you can find the camera app there. When you do find, move the Camera app somewhere that’s easily accessible.

Where is the camera on the front of my iPad?

The camera on the front of your iPad is almost impossible to see, especially if your iPad edges are black. To find the front-facing camera, locate your home button. Now take a look directly across the screen at the other short edge of your iPad. You will see a tiny little circle about the underneath the glass, directly opposite the home button. That is your front-facing camera, also called the Selfie Cam.

Does the iPad have a good camera?

Yes. Your iPad has a great camera. Here are a few tricks to help you get the most out of it:

Make sure you keep the cameras clean.
They can easily become dirty. Gently clean them with a microfibre cloth.
Another good trick when taking pictures is to hold your iPad in landscape mode, with the short edges of the iPad in your hands.
Use either of the volume buttons to take your picture. This will save you from taking one hand off the iPad to press the onscreen shutter button.
If you are using your iPad for video calls, get a stand to prop the iPad on. Make sure the stand is placed high enough so people aren’t looking up your nose during your call! Never a good look.
