To hide the onscreen keyboard, tap the Keyboard key (bottom right). When you need the keyboard back again, tap on any text field, or tap the place you want to enter text. The onscreen keyboard appears automatically.

Using uppercase letters

To use a capital letter, tap the up-arrow (or Shift key) found to the left of the Z or to the right of the ? key.

The Shift key will turn white with a black up-arrow when it’s activated. The next letter you type will be a capital letter, and subsequent letters will be lower case. You don’t need to turn it off.

To turn off the Shift key, tap it again. It is grey when it is not activated.

Typing in ALL CAPS

If you want to capitalize more than one character, double-tap the Shift key. Notice the underline below the up-arrow. This means every character you type will be uppercase.

Tap the Shift key once to turn off ALL CAPS.

Using punctuation, numbers, and symbols

Using accented letters

Accented letters are found by using the touch and hold gesture. Touch and hold on the letter you want to accent. Keep your finger on the screen when the popup menu appears. Slide your finger to the character you want. Lift your finger off the screen.

Using Emoji

To use Emoji, tap on the smiley face icon to the left of the space bar. Select the Emoji you want from the menu. You can swipe the Emoji menu to the right to reveal more options. Touch and hold on an emoji to see other versions, when available.

Ending a sentence with a period

Apple makes ending a sentence with a period easy. Just double-tap the space bar at the end of your sentence. This automatically enters a period. And, the next letter you type after a period will be a capital letter. Love that!

Some people want to make words seem louder or draw attention to certain words, so they use capital letters. But typing in ALL CAPS is the equivalent of shouting at someone. In the digital world, using ALL CAPS is considered very rude.

If you want to make a point, consider shorter sentences, all on their own in a paragraph. Or you could bold some words. Maybe an Emoji could help get your point across? But WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T USE ALL CAPS. See what I mean.

Absolutely. Some iPads can even use a mouse as well. Most Bluetooth or wireless keyboards will work with an iPad. You don’t have to buy an Apple wireless keyboard. Some cases come with a keyboard built-in. This is a nice option.

To connect your wireless keyboard to your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth

Get your keyboard ready to pair, and then select your keyboard from the options under OTHER DEVICES. If you don’t see your keyboard, make sure it is in pairing mode and is charged. If that still doesn’t work, you may need to consult the keyboard instructions.
